Jay (Maika Monroe) is a young teenager who lives in the suburb of an American city. One day, she has a date with Hugh, another high school student, and they end up having sex in his car. Suddenly, he kidnaps her, and he ties her to a chair in an abandoned building.

Hugh reveals his curse to Jay: someone, or something, is constantly chasing him, walking tirelessly towards him, changing its shape and trying to murder him. Hugh has passed his curse to Jay, who now will have to escape until the day she dies or passes the curse to someone else.

In the beginning, Jay does not believe what Hugh has told her. Then, she realizes she is being followed whereever she goes, either by a scary old woman, a dead bleeding lady, or a naked man, that only she is able to see. It’s the beginning of an endless nightmare…

The basic idea of the movie is very simple and effective. As the monster walks, slowly but relentlessly, towards his victims, they are forced to always keep one eye open. They have to stay in rooms with at least two exits, and rest and sleep on the hoods of their cars. The victims do not know when “it” will arrive, even when they think they left it far behind.

What is also interesting about the movie is the way the curse is passed from one victim to the other: sex. In this sense, the most intimate and pleasant moment becomes a damnation, recalling the stigma of the venereal diseases.

Director and screenplayer David Robert Mitchell is capable of creating not only moments of increasing suspence, but also a general sense of oppression that “follows” the spectator for the whole duration of the movie, and even afterwards.

Furthermore, the soundtrack, characterized by the pounding and violent rhythms of Slipknot’s heavy metal repertory, contributes greatly to the mood of the movie.
In conclusion, It Follows represents surely an original idea in the horror cinematographic panorama, and watching this movie will make you face your fears once and for all.
