New York, 1943. Arturo (Pif) is in love with Flora (Miriam Leone), but she has been promised to another man. They are both from Italy, and they have only one chance to get married: Arturo has to win the approval of her father, who lives in Crisafulli, a small village in Sicily. So, he decides to enlist in the US Army, which is preparing to invade the island and to fight nazifascism.

When he arrives in Sicily, in the service of the lieutenant Philip Catelli (Andrea Di Stefano), Arturo is focused solely on finding Flora’s father and initially does not see what is really happening on the island. The only one who seems to understand is Catelli, who discovers that the US Army is conquering and governing the island, thanks to a secret pact with the Sicilian mafia. This agreement permits an almost nonviolent occupation of the area, but also gives important positions in government to many mafia bosses. When Arturo understands the situation, he has to choose between his love for Flora and the difficult mission of fighting the mafia.

Pif (artistic namesake of Pierfrancesco Diliberto), directs the movie and interprets the role of Arturo. As in his previous movie (The Mafia Kills Only in Summer), La mafia uccide solo d’estate), Pif interprets a simple person, always looking for love, who comes across events he does not immediately understand. He is always forced by the events to undertake a way of awareness. Using this character, Pif explains, in a simple way, the relationship between mafia and society.
His movies have something of a fairy-tale quality: there is a voice over who tells us the story, and a delicate mix between comical and tragic. Moreover, some images seem to come from an illustrated storybook: the sequence of Arturo landing in Sicily on a flying donkey is especially poetic. The only cost of this simplification of the history is a stereotyped representation of Sicily and of the mafia itself, but this fact does not diminish the message of the movie.
